My 7.3l idi turbo has problems starting sometimes, the volt gauge shows about 8 volts. When it is running it gets back to 16 volts. Once it is running I will turn on the lights and they flicker for about a minute and then work and stay bright after wards. If i already have the lights on and turn on the radio, and bring up the volume to over about an eighth of the way, the radio becomes muffled and no longer in stereo; it will only play the acoustic or vocal part and less than half volume than what the dial shows. Other times when the radio works and i go over a large bump the radio does the same thing mentioned and the volt meter goes back and forth. The batteries are old but have been tested and check out fine and the alternator puts out 127 of 130 amps and 16 volts. I can live with the radio problem but the truck just would not start on Monday so i ask for any helpful advice. Thank you.

sounds like bad batteries and/or maybe a shoddy voltage regualtor. Did you have the alternator checked on a bench or on the truck? As for the batteries, did they load test them? If it was only a problem starting, I would look towards a faulty starter, but since it happens running, I'm thinking alternator.

The alternator was tested in truck first but got a false reading of 8amps. So we took it out thinking that was my problem. It was tested on the bench and it passed. i fixed the battery wire running to the back of the alternator because it looked like it needed to be replaced. They tested the alternator again after i put it back into the truck and it passed. I do not think the batteries were load tested unless the machine does it when testing the alternator too. He said it could be a fusible wire or my glow plug wire grounding. I could spot spark plug wires easy but have yet to find any glow plug wires. Although i thought it could have been the battery wire running to the alternator after changing it, i still have the same problems. Thanks for the reply screwd_up

If they tested the batteries in the truck with the alternator test, they probably weren't load tested. Take em out, have em charged and load tested. You could have a weak or bad cell in one battery.
